10-bit A/D, 2,700 dpi
The COOLSCAN III takes in 10-bit, tone-rich data for each color channel as it is. Wide dynamic range and beautiful gradation with 256 tones for each color channel (2563=16 million colors) enable faithful reproduction of the original image. High-resolution input of 2,700 dpi (on the film surface) results in sharp images and smooth curves. It reproduces solid objects and minute details beautifully.
High-speed scanning
Get full-color scans at 2,700 dpi in only 20 seconds*! Benefit from the speed of the COOLSCAN III without sacrificing Nikon’s traditionally high quality. When scanning multiple films, first try thumbnail scanning. After selecting the images you want to scan, use batch scanning -- available with the strip film adapter (up to 6 frames at 30 sec./6 frames) and the optional IX240 film adapter (up to 40 frames at 80 sec./25 frames) -- to accomplish your work more efficiently.
*Typical scan time without data transfer to computer.
Autofocus
The COOLSCAN III automatically adjusts the focus by compensating for the thickness of the slide mounts and curling of the film that may occur. The need for user intervention is eliminated, enabling sharp images to be obtained easily. In addition, user select spot autofocus, which adjusts focus based on any spot on the image you have selected, is available.
“CleanImage™”**
Scanning original films faithfully means that surface defects such as dust, scratches, fungus and fingerprints are also scanned. Until now, removing them was tedious work which was difficult and time consuming.Nikon’s “CleanImage™” greatly simplifies this process. In addition to three channels of RGB for reading images, the fourth channel (D) detects these defects accurately. Nikon’s superb technology analyzes the defect information and automatically provides virtually defect-free images.
Nikon Color Management System
Final color matching is very important for output devices of different environments, such as the Internet, CD-ROMs, film recorders and printing. These data read by the COOLSCAN III are mode-converted optimally, and can be edited and corrected by RGB, CMYK and HSL parameters. The Nikon Color Management System performs the optimal color adjustment in each mode, enabling the near-perfect representation of the original film’s color on the output device monitor
