Distortion correction for a natural-looking image
Thanks to its high optical quality, combined with Ricoh's lens coating technology, the 28mm GR lens provides superb color reproduction on a level with some of the world's finest lenses. The lens has bee
n designed to meet the strict performance requirements of color slide film. One measure of its success is the aperture efficiency data, which is nearly 100% at F5.6. Another is the high level of distortion correction performance and the very neutral color
contribution index.
Exposure compensation dial to create special exposure effects
This dial is an important feature in advanced SLR cameras and has been included in the GR1s. It compensates exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in half steps, to enable th
e expression of intentional exposure effects, especially in slide films where print compensation isn't possible. It is also effective for high-key or low-key expression, and bracketing exposure for professionals.
A seven-blade shutter for an nearly rou
nd lens aperture
The quality of ''out of focus'' areas in an image is highly dependent on the shape of the shutter. While most compact camera designers ignore this factor during the design phase, the designers of the GR1s specified a high-quality shutt
er with a seven-blade aperture, for a nearly round lens iris. This is precisely controlled for correct exposures, and makes a significant difference in photographic expression. It is also important for advanced amateur photographers who use various apertu
re priority settings for photographs with controlled depth of field.
Aperture priority AE for greater freedom of expression
A number of elements go into creating a good photograph, correct exposure, accurate focus, proper framing, good shutter timin
g and so on. Of all of these, the beginning photographer is most likely to underestimate the importance of aperture control. The GR1s, however, incorporates aperture priority AE to meet the demanding requirements of advanced photographers. you can set the
aperture from F2.8 to F22 in 1/2 steps in order to achieve the desired aperture effect. You can also enjoy easy snapshot operation simply by setting the aperture dial to ''p'' for Program AE mode.
Passive-type multi auto focus system for highly accura
te focus
Two of the most popular features of compact cameras are small size, for easy portability, and autofocus, for easy operation. The GR1s balances the requirements of compactness and autofocus performance by using a highly accurate passive-type AF
system. Unlike conventional active-type AF systems, the passive-type system can focus on objects located on the opposite side of a transparent window. Another helpful feature is wide multi-AF framing, so that even if your subject is off center it will sti
ll be in focus. The distance symbols at the bottom of the viewfinder indicate where the lens is focused.
Center-weighted exposure metering for advanced requirements
Being able to utilize a center-weighted exposure metering system is a big advantage
for photographers who want the freedom to compose shots as they please under various lighting conditions. The GR1s provides both a conventional average metering system and a center-weighted system, so you can choose the best exposure metering for any situ
ation. When you press the mode button for Single Auto Focus, center-weighted exposure metering is activated automatically (at EV6 and above).
Lens hood eases backlighting difficulties
When the image you want to capture has strong backlighting, simpl
y attach the GR1s lens hood. This compact hood is easily removed and stored, but can be quickly attached when needed. This incredibly useful accessory is included with the GR1s - but not with most compact cameras.
